AVM issues security guidance for FritzBox router users

AVM has issued security recommendations for FritzBox router users to protect home networks against increasing internet-based threats. The company advises establishing monthly maintenance routines, including checking software versions and security settings.

Recent updates to FritzOS, specifically for fiber and cable models, include new DNS filter lists to control outgoing data traffic and an SOS emergency call function for FritzFon. Additionally, new overload protection has been implemented for FritzSmart Energy smart plugs.

Security experts, including the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), recommend disabling the 'remote access' (Fernzugang) function if it is not strictly necessary, as it can leave the router interface vulnerable to automated attacks. Other recommended security measures include changing default passwords, maintaining up-to-date firmware, using complex Wi-Fi passwords, and setting up guest networks.
