Šavnik Culture Center seeks regional status for Pekić House

The Šavnik Culture Center is advocating for the transformation of the ‘Pekić House’ residential center into an official Regional Cultural Center for northern Montenegro. This initiative aims to challenge the traditional centralization of culture within the Podgorica–Cetinje–Coast triangle.

Janko Ljumović, a professor at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts at the University of Montenegro, supports the move, noting that the center utilizes an innovative, flexible organizational model based on networking and partnerships. He suggests that a regional center should be defined by the reach of its ideas and program quality rather than administrative size or building capacity.

The center has already demonstrated significant capacity through projects such as the ‘Dva sunca’ festival and the ‘ŠAV’ visual-literary program. In a historic first for the municipality, the Montenegrin National Theatre is scheduled to perform in Šavnik as part of the ‘Culture in Northern Montenegro’ project, which is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Media.
