Avocado and tropical fruit markets face strategic and climatic shifts

The global avocado and tropical fruit markets are undergoing significant shifts driven by changing consumer habits and climate change. Westfalia Fruit has announced a new strategic vision for the Asian market, emphasizing that future growth will depend on consumer insights rather than just increasing supply volumes. The company noted that markets such as China, Japan, South Korea, and India require localized approaches due to varying preferences in food applications, quality expectations, and retail formats.

Simultaneously, a RaboResearch report suggests that climate change may expand the suitability for tropical fruit production in southern Europe. While not expected to replace imports, local production of avocados and mangoes in Spain and Portugal could complement existing supplies, particularly during periods when winter availability of imports tightens. Spain currently maintains the largest avocado industry in continental Europe, with expansion occurring in regions like Andalusia, Cádiz, and Huelva, while Portugal is seeing growth in the Algarve.
