Avocado Linked to Lower Heart Risk in Adults, Yet Poses Toxic Threat to Dogs
A recent U.S. study involving 786 adults with abdominal obesity found that eating one avocado each day for 26 weeks reduced LDL particle counts, translating to an estimated 4% decrease in the risk of cardiovascular disease. The research was published in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology.
Conversely, avocado contains a substance called persin, concentrated in the skin and pit, which can be harmful to dogs. Ingesting avocado may cause gastrointestinal upset, pancreatitis, and in severe cases, heart muscle damage and respiratory problems. Reported symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and loss of appetite. Documented cases of serious toxicity in dogs are limited, but owners are advised to keep avocados away from their pets.
