Avocado prices climb to record levels in Mexico and Chile amid supply disruptions

In Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, the price of Hass Extra avocado reached 105.99 pesos per kilogram, one of the highest levels recorded this season. Medium‑size Hass sold for about 71.99 pesos, while larger fruit could be bought for 96.90 pesos per kilo when three kilograms were purchased. Local merchants said the price gap reflects differences in size and flesh content rather than a temporary discount, and noted that avocado prices vary widely across regions and retail outlets.

In Chile’s Biobío region, vendors reported price hikes for avocados, tomatoes and other vegetables after recent frontal weather systems caused heavy rains, flooding and road closures. Union leaders Paola Huenchumán and Sara Muñoz said the added costs are being passed along the supply chain. SEREMI de Agricultura Marcelo Jelves explained that the events reduced short‑cycle crops such as lettuce, cilantro and tomatoes, but expected prices to normalise once harvest and transport resume. Lettuce prices at market stalls rose to between 2,000 and 3,000 Chilean pesos, compared with typical prices of 1,000‑1,500 pesos.
