Avocado Study Shows Reduced LDL Particle Levels in Adults with Abdominal Obesity
A randomized, controlled trial involving nearly 800 adults—predominantly women with an average age of about 50 and excess abdominal fat—added one avocado per day to their diet for 26 weeks, while a control group maintained their usual diet. The researchers measured detailed lipoprotein particle profiles, focusing on LDL particles that contribute to arterial plaque formation.
After the intervention, participants who ate an avocado daily exhibited a modest reduction in the total concentration of LDL particles. No significant changes were observed in LDL particle size, other lipoprotein subclasses, HDL levels, or triglyceride‑rich particles. The findings suggest a small, favorable shift in a specific cardiovascular risk marker, but experts caution that the results do not equate to a measurable decrease in heart attack or stroke risk and should be considered within an overall healthy lifestyle.
