Avocados Offer Human Nutritional Benefits but Pose Risks for Dogs

Avocados provide a dense nutritional profile for people, delivering about 30% of the daily recommended intake of vitamin B6, 41% of folate, substantial monounsaturated fats, fibre and antioxidants such as glutathione. Studies link their consumption to reduced heart‑disease risk, improved nutrient absorption, healthier digestion, skin benefits and possible weight‑management aid.

For dogs, however, avocados can be hazardous. The plant contains persin, especially concentrated in the skin and pit, which may cause gastrointestinal upset, pancreatitis, cardiac muscle damage or even heart‑rhythm disturbances. The fruit’s high fat content is also difficult for dogs to digest. Symptoms typically appear hours after ingestion and include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, lethargy, loss of appetite, breathing problems or irregular heartbeat. In severe cases, the pit can cause intestinal blockage requiring surgery. Pet owners are advised to keep avocados and especially their skins and pits out of reach and to seek veterinary care if a dog shows any concerning signs.
