Avranches Burger King manager killed in South Africa; child rescued, suspects arrested

French authorities confirmed that Katia Nguyen, the manager of a Burger King restaurant in Avranches, was among three people murdered in the Pretoria region of South Africa on 11 July 2026. The victims also included her 69‑year‑old mother and her 49‑year‑old husband, who was the restaurant director. All three died from multiple blows with a blunt instrument. The trio had been traveling with Nguyen’s minor daughter, who was abducted during the attack. European cooperation enabled the child’s safe recovery and immediate repatriation to France.

The French prosecutor’s office in Coutances, led by Gauthier Poupeau, announced that an investigation for organized murder and kidnapping was opened on 16 July. European arrest warrants resulted in the apprehension of two primary suspects – Nguyen’s ex‑husband, aged 44, and a 71‑year‑old relative – by Luxembourg authorities on 22 July. Both suspects are detained pending extradition to France. Burger King issued a statement expressing deep sorrow and offering psychological support to its staff.

The investigation continues, with additional close relatives detained in France and extradition procedures under way.
