Italy political tensions rise amid Calenda-Casalino debate and AVS Puglia dispute

Italian political figures Carlo Calenda and Rocco Casalino engaged in a heated debate on the television program diMartedì regarding the Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S) and the economic impact of the Conte administration.

Calenda criticized Giuseppe Conte, alleging that his government ‘disintegrated public finances’ by spending 253 billion euros, largely through measures like the Superbonus. Casalino countered that these funds supported the construction and renewable energy sectors during the pandemic-induced economic crisis, calling Calenda’s characterization ‘intellectually dishonest.’

Separately, political tensions have emerged in Puglia. The Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra (AVS) expressed solidarity with Angelo Bonelli following personal attacks from Salerno Mayor Vincenzo De Luca. AVS has called on the Democratic Party (PD) to take a clear political stance regarding the tone of the discourse.
