Awaba Park reopens after $290,000 revitalization
Awaba Park, also known as Hamilton Station Park, has officially reopened following a $290,000 renovation funded by the City of Newcastle and the state government. The project aims to transform a space previously associated with drug use, alcohol consumption, and antisocial behavior into a welcoming community hub.
The revitalized park now includes new landscaping, accessible seating, a weatherproof community pantry, and a notice board. To encourage community engagement and prevent a return to previous issues, the park is scheduled to host the Hawker Street Markets this September.
Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp noted that the park's activation is part of a broader effort to revitalize Beaumont Street, which includes increased police presence, expanded social and homelessness services, and a CCTV trial. Kasey Pollard, chair of the Hamilton Business Improvement Association, expressed hope that the park will serve as a gateway connecting the train station to the local Beaumont Street area.
