Awards Season: Early Contenders Emerge for Oscars and Golden Globes

The 2026-2027 awards season is beginning to take shape as industry predictions emerge for the Oscars and Golden Globes.

For the Best International Feature Oscar, several films have gained momentum through the festival circuit. Spain’s ‘La Bola Negra’ is a strong contender following its Toronto International Film Festival People’s Choice Award win. Other notable competitors include Romania’s ‘Fjord’, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, and France’s ‘Minotaur’. South Korea’s ‘Possible Love’ has also seen significant movement following Lee Chang-dong’s directing award at the Venice Film Festival. Conversely, Denmark’s ‘Woman Unknown’ faces uncertainty due to a lack of U.S. distribution.

Regarding the Golden Globes, the competition is expected to be particularly strong in the comedy/musical category for the third consecutive year. In the drama category, early leaders include Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘La Bola Negra’. Additionally, early reports indicate positive reception for Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune: Part Three’ following small-group screenings.
