AWO Schwaben calls for heat protection funding for nursing homes
Nursing homes in the Swabia region are struggling to protect elderly residents from rising temperatures. The welfare association AWO Schwaben reports that many facilities lack sufficient funding to invest in necessary heat protection measures, leading to calls for increased political and financial support.
While newer facilities, such as the Augsburg-Herrenbach senior home, utilize modern heat-mitigation strategies like specialized window films, insulation, green roofs, and PV shading, many other facilities operate in older buildings not designed for extreme heat.
The lack of climate control poses significant risks, including resident discomfort and the potential loss of medication, which must be stored below 25 degrees Celsius. AWO Schwaben emphasizes that air conditioning in staff rooms is also critical for maintaining operational standards during heatwaves.
