Major cloud providers AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud are deploying Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, which serve as the interface between AI agents and the tools they utilize. While the protocol provides a common standard, the implementation strategies of the major providers differ significantly.

AWS offers a suite of options, including open-source MCP servers published by AWS Labs and a managed remote AWS MCP Server currently in preview. The AWS approach integrates agent activity into existing control planes, utilizing IAM for access control and CloudWatch or CloudTrail for logging and auditing.

Microsoft provides a more productized approach with the Azure MCP Server, which is designed to work with clients such as GitHub Copilot agent mode and the OpenAI Agents SDK, utilizing Entra ID for identity management.
