AWS Backup centralizes data protection and EC2 restoration settings

AWS Backup provides a centralized, policy-driven service to manage data protection across various AWS services, replacing fragmented configurations for resources like RDS, EBS, and DynamoDB. Users can define backup plans with specific schedules and retention rules, storing recovery points in encrypted vaults. Implementing a vault lock policy can prevent the deletion of backups before their expiration, even by root accounts, ensuring compliance.

When restoring Amazon EC2 instances via AWS Backup, certain configurations are preserved while others revert to default values. Settings such as instance type, key pairs, IAM instance profiles, shutdown behavior, termination protection, and EBS optimization are maintained during restoration. However, specific metadata, tags, and certain network settings may require manual reconfiguration depending on whether the restoration is performed through the AWS Management Console or the AWS CLI.
