AWS invests $1 billion in engineering initiative for agentic AI

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is investing $1 billion into a new Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) organization. This initiative aims to place AWS AI engineers directly within customer businesses to co-develop and deploy agentic AI systems.

Unveiled at the AWS Summit in Johannesburg, the model responds to a shift where organizations seek to rebuild business processes around agentic AI. Unlike traditional consulting models based on billable hours, the FDE approach focuses on shared business outcomes and compressed deployment timelines, aiming to move projects from months to days.

Under this model, AWS engineers embed themselves within a customer’s engineering and security teams to implement production systems using the client's own data and governance frameworks. The goal is to ensure customer self-sufficiency once the engagement concludes.
