AWS Lambda expands runtime support with new Java, Python and Node.js versions

Amazon Web Services announced that AWS Lambda now offers Java 8, Java 11 and Java 17 runtimes on Amazon Linux 2023 (AL2023). The update lets customers move functions from the retiring Amazon Linux 2 platform, whose end‑of‑life is 30 June 2026, to AL2023 without changing the Java version, while recommending upgrades to Java 21 or Java 25 for full feature benefits. The new Java runtimes are available in all Lambda‑enabled regions, including GovCloud (US) and China.

In a separate update, AWS added support for Python 3.15 and Node.js 26 runtimes, accessible via the AWS CLI. Developers can deploy functions using these versions, as demonstrated in the Tokyo (ap‑northeast‑1) region, where the runtimes operate on the latest AL2023 base images. Existing AL2‑based Java runtimes will continue receiving critical security patches until 30 June 2027, giving users a year to transition.
