AWS plans 36-building data center campus in Pennsylvania
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has filed plans to develop the Homer City Energy Campus in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. The project involves constructing 36 data center buildings across 1,100 acres in Center and Blacklick townships, approximately 50 miles east of Pittsburgh.
To power the massive computing operation, a new 4.5GW natural gas generation facility is being developed by Homer City Redevelopment. While most of the electricity will serve AWS, more than 1GW is expected to be supplied to the Pennsylvania electrical grid. The site previously hosted a 2GW coal station, which was the largest of its kind in the state before closing in 2023.
The development is expected to create between 1,500 and 2,000 jobs, with average annual salaries estimated between $80,000 and $100,000. Construction is planned in four stages, beginning in December 2026 and continuing through June 2036.
