AWS Serverless Comparison: Lambda vs Fargate and Layer Optimization

Amazon Web Services (AWS) offers two primary serverless models: Lambda and Fargate. Lambda is designed for event-driven or request-based code execution, typically handling functions that finish within a 15-minute default invocation limit. It supports Event Functions, Web Functions for standard web apps, and Managed Instances for dedicated capacity.

In contrast, Fargate is a container-first service used for running long-running workloads or services via Amazon ECS or EKS without managing underlying servers. While Lambda manages networking and isolation per invocation, Fargate provides a dedicated runtime environment for each task or pod.

For developers using Lambda, managing deployment package sizes is critical due to the 250 MB unzipped limit. Using Lambda layers to share code and data can help, but large libraries like the Python SDK 'boto3' can consume significant space. Optimizing these layers by removing unnecessary directories such as documentation, tests, and examples can reduce the unzipped size and improve function cold-start times.
