Axa faces potential end to Monte Paschi distribution partnership
Axa SA is preparing for the possible termination of its long-standing distribution partnership with Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena SpA when the contract is up for renewal next year. Reports suggest that shifting ownership structures in the Italian financial sector, including the potential takeover of Monte Paschi by Intesa Sanpaolo SpA, have increased the likelihood that the agreement will not be renewed.
While Axa CEO Thomas Buberl has previously described the agreement as being of “great importance” to the firm, analysts suggest the financial impact may be limited. Estimates indicate that a loss of the contract could affect less than 2% of Axa’s European life and health insurance results, rather than the group's total bottom line.
Axa has stated it is prepared for “all options” regarding the contract. The situation is complicated by recent developments at Monte Paschi, where CEO Luigi Lovaglio faces investor opposition to counter-moves intended to prevent a takeover, potentially impacting the bank's future strategic alliances.
