Axel Kicillof presents Hebe Uhart Novel Prize 2026

Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof presided over the fourth edition of the Hebe Uhart Novel Prize at the provincial Government House. The award, which aims to promote artistic creativity and new narratives, received 434 entries from 75 municipalities.

Alfredo Merlo won the prize for his novel ‘Un mundo por destruir’, which will be published by the state-owned publisher Ediciones Bonaerenses. Viviana Bernadó received a special mention for her novel ‘Entonces mi vida vendrá hacia mí’.

During the ceremony, Kicillof criticized the national government's economic policies, claiming they have caused a devastating crisis in the publishing industry. He cited data from the Argentine Book Chamber indicating a 35% decrease in copies printed in 2025. Kicillof characterized the reduction in funding for culture, science, and education as a deliberate ‘cultural battle’ by the Milei administration to target national identity and critical thinking.
