Axel Rudakubana faces new charges for alleged prison assaults

Axel Rudakubana, the individual convicted of murdering three children during a Southport dance class in 2024, appeared via video link at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday. He is facing new charges related to violent incidents occurring during his time at HMP Belmarsh prison.

Prosecutors allege that in May 2025, Rudakubana threw a mixture of boiling water and sugar through a cell door hatch at a prison officer. The court heard that the addition of sugar can increase the liquid's temperature and stickiness. Other charges include two counts of assaulting an emergency worker and possession of an offensive weapon, specifically sharpened stone shards allegedly prised from his cell floor.

Rudakubana, who is currently serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 52 years, has been transferred from prison to Broadmoor, a high-security psychiatric hospital. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at the Old Bailey on October 19.
