Axel Witsel discusses OGC Nice captaincy and career goals

Axel Witsel, the 37-year-old Belgian midfielder for OGC Nice, has discussed his new role as club captain and his future career plans. Witsel stated that while he is proud to wear the captain's armband, he does not feel the need for it to act as a leader within the squad.

He also addressed the recent transition of leadership, praising Jonathan Clauss for stepping down from the captaincy. Regarding the team's performance, Witsel noted improvements in team spirit and cohesion following a recent victory against Lille.

Looking ahead, Witsel aims to extend his playing career beyond his current contract, which runs until June 2025. He has set a personal goal of reaching 1,000 career matches, a milestone he is currently 92 matches away from achieving.
