Axia Energia dominates Northeast Brazil hydroelectric capacity

Axia Energia holds a dominant position in the Northeast Brazilian energy sector, controlling 93% of the region's installed hydroelectric capacity. According to data from the National Electric System Operator (ONS), the company's 12 hydroelectric plants represent 10,263 MW of the region's 11,028 MW total capacity. During the first half of 2026, these assets generated 14.84 TWh, accounting for approximately 30% of the energy consumed in the Northeast.

Key assets include the Paulo Afonso Complex (4,280 MW), the Xingó plant (3,162 MW), and the Luiz Gonzaga plant (1,480 MW). The Luiz Gonzaga plant is currently undergoing a R$ 1 billion modernization project intended to add 246.6 MW to its production capacity.

In conjunction with its generation role, the ONS has instructed Axia Norte and Axia Nordeste to adjust protection systems on 221 transmission lines across the North and Northeast regions. These adjustments, to be completed by November 30, 2026, aim to standardize power oscillation blocking functions (68OSB). This technical standardization is designed to help protection systems distinguish between power oscillations and actual short-circuit events that require equipment shutdowns.
