Ayacucho authorities return remains of 33 victims of internal armed conflict

The Public Ministry has returned the identified remains of 33 victims of Peru's internal armed conflict to their families in Ayacucho. The victims, including men, women, and children, died during various episodes of violence recorded between 1980 and 2000 in the provinces of Víctor Fajardo, La Mar, Huamanga, and Huanta.

Among the identified individuals were 13 people killed in August 1984 by state agents, with remains recovered from mass graves in Víctor Fajardo. Other cases include nine individuals from the La Mar province and 11 victims who died during forced displacements, known as “retiradas,” when community members sought refuge in caves and ravines to escape violence.

The identification process involved a multidisciplinary team of specialists in archaeology, anthropology, surgery, dentistry, medicine, and biology. Forensic experts utilized testimonies, documents, and genetic analysis to establish identities, in some cases after families had waited approximately 35 to 40 years.

Authorities noted that while this restitution ceremony took place at the Huamanga Cathedral, the search for other missing persons continues. Officials emphasized that ongoing investigations require increased budget, logistics, and specialized personnel to address the high volume of cases handled by human rights prosecutors in the region.
