Peru faces widespread forest fires across multiple regions

Multiple regions in Peru are facing severe forest fire emergencies. In Ayacucho, the Regional Emergency Operations Center (COER) reports 120 fires since late June, affecting approximately 3,000 hectares of natural vegetation and resulting in the death of 18 cattle. October has seen a significant surge in activity, with 58 fires reported this month alone.

Nationwide, the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) has reported 51 fires across 13 regions, while satellite monitoring from Serfor suggests the impact may extend to 16 regions. In Huancavelica, seven districts reported fires simultaneously, with the Tintaypuncu district requesting urgent aerial support to protect local crops and homes. In Moquegua, a five-day fire in San Cristóbal de Calacoa was recently brought under control.

In response to long-term environmental challenges, Serfor has reported progress in reforestation, having planted 3.5 million commercial trees across seven regions, supported by 41 million soles in incentives. These efforts aim to bolster sustainable forest management amidst the ongoing fire risks.
