Ayacucho proposes Razuhuillca Regional Conservation Area

The Ayacucho Regional Government is advancing a proposal to establish the Razuhuillca Regional Conservation Area (ACR) to protect approximately 2,500 hectares of ecosystem. The project is currently in its third phase, which involves prior consultation with indigenous peoples. The area includes seven lagoons that are vital for providing water to Huanta for both human consumption and agriculture.

Establishing the ACR would grant regional authorities the legal power to regulate and manage activities within the territory to prevent environmental impacts. Officials noted that without this specific legal status, the government lacks the necessary jurisdiction to effectively order and control land use in the region.

In a broader context regarding regional conservation, sociologist César Bedoya highlights that the sustainability of such areas depends on institutional design and territorial governance. He notes that ACRs often become sites of social conflict because they represent a convergence of ecological, productive, cultural, and political interests.
