Public health alerts rise across Latin America amid disease outbreaks
Public health challenges are mounting across Latin America. In Peru, the Loreto region has confirmed its first measles death this year, involving a 16-year-old unvaccinated adolescent. The outbreak has resulted in 57 cases in the region, prompting the Ministry of Health to deploy 23 brigades to contain the spread. This comes amid reports of low national vaccination coverage for measles and polio.
In the Dominican Republic, CEPAL has praised the nation's policy for preventing early unions and adolescent pregnancy, noting a 40% reduction in adolescent pregnancies between 2021 and 2025. Meanwhile, Costa Rica reported 1,574 births to adolescent and child mothers in 2025, though the overall fertility rate for this demographic is trending downward.
Other regional concerns include a rise in HIV cases in Cochabamba, Bolivia, where 14% of the 418 reported cases involve adolescents. Additionally, the Lambayeque region in Peru is battling a dengue outbreak with over 4,300 confirmed cases and 14 deaths.
