Ayalolo BRT introduces contra-flow lanes to ease Accra congestion
The Ghanaian government has launched a contra-flow traffic arrangement for Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services to alleviate congestion in Accra’s Central Business District. Effective September 29, 2026, the initiative allows authorized Ayalolo buses to travel against the standard direction of traffic on designated sections of major commuter corridors.
The pilot program covers the Amasaman, Pokuase, Adenta, and Kasoa corridors. The contra-flow lanes will operate during peak commuting hours: from 6:00 am to 9:00 am and from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, in collaboration with the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE), the Department of Urban Roads, and the Ghana Police Service, is overseeing the implementation.
Strict restrictions are in place for other road users. Private cars, taxis, trotros, okadas, and commercial trucks are prohibited from using the designated lanes. The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) and GAPTE wardens will be deployed to major intersections to enforce compliance. Authorities have warned that motorists violating these restrictions may face legal action. The goal of the measure is to improve bus punctuality, reduce journey times, and encourage a shift toward mass public transportation.
