Ayawaso West Assembly faces parliamentary scrutiny over unauthorized structures

The Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly has faced scrutiny from Parliament’s Local Government and Rural Development Committee regarding unauthorized developments in East Legon. Assembly officials admitted to the committee that they had not approved the various containers and temporary structures currently occupying parts of the high-value residential and commercial district.

During the hearing, Municipal Chief Executive Dr. Michael Mensah clarified that the Assembly has not issued building permits to private developers working along the GIMPA-Toyota road. He noted that construction on lands belonging to the University of Ghana is supervised by the university’s own Development Office, which has created challenges regarding permit jurisdiction. Dr. Mensah stated that the Assembly has officially contacted the university regarding ongoing construction and its role in the deterioration of local roads due to inadequate drainage and construction activities.

In response to the proliferation of unapproved structures, Committee Chairperson Queenstar Maame Pokuah Sawyerr directed the Assembly to develop a comprehensive enforcement plan to address unauthorized buildings and ensure future compliance with physical planning regulations.
