Aybüke Sude Buzkıran develops AI to boost Mars data transmission
Aybüke Sude Buzkıran, a graduate of Istanbul Technical University, has developed an artificial intelligence-based algorithm designed to significantly improve data transmission from Mars to Earth. Working as part of the Tumbleweed Mars international volunteer space initiative, Buzkıran focused on solving communication challenges faced by fleets of autonomous rovers.
The algorithm manages the complexities of limited bandwidth and satellite congestion by analyzing real-time factors such as rover battery levels, data memory capacity, and mission priorities. This automated planning system determines the optimal timing and volume of data transfers for each vehicle in a swarm.
Simulations of the system demonstrated a 91% increase in the efficiency of transferring critical scientific data from the Martian surface to Earth. Buzkıran presented these findings via an oral presentation at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC 2026) held in Antalya.
