Aydın chestnut growers face gal wasp threat as control insects fall short
Aydın province, Turkey's top chestnut‑producing region, is confronting a severe gal wasp (gal arısı) infestation that endangers thousands of hectares of orchards. The Ministry of Agriculture and local agricultural chambers have deployed terminator insects to combat the pest, but producers report that these biological controls are ineffective.
The infestation covers roughly 79,000 decares of chestnut trees, especially in the districts of Nazilli, Sultanhisar and Köşk, and is causing significant yield losses for farmers who rely on chestnut cultivation as a primary livelihood. Authorities advise growers to conduct regular inspections and manually remove gall formations at tree bases, but producers continue to call for stronger assistance.
The Aydın Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry reiterates the need for systematic monitoring and removal of gall structures, highlighting the ongoing challenge of protecting the region’s chestnut output from the expanding gal wasp population.
