Aydın wild hawthorn fruit hits markets at 150 TL per kilo
Wild hawthorn fruit (alıç), which grows naturally in the mountainous regions of Aydın, Turkey, has begun appearing in local markets as the weather cools. The fruit is harvested from thorny, shrub-like trees in the forest areas and valleys of the Dağeymiri neighborhood in the Efeler district.
Due to the rugged, rocky terrain and the thorny nature of the plants, harvesting the fruit is a labor-intensive process. The small, nut-sized fruits come in yellow, red, and orange hues and are known for their sour taste. They are sold in local markets for 150 TL per kilogram.
In addition to fresh consumption, the fruit is used to make jams and marmalades. Local vendors note that the fruit is traditionally viewed as a sign of approaching winter and is sought after for its perceived health benefits, particularly regarding heart, respiratory, and kidney health.
