Ayitey Powers arrested for alleged death threat against Ghana NSA chief

Former professional boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, known as ‘Ayitey Powers’, has been arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command following an alleged death threat against a government official. The arrest occurred on Monday, August 24, 2026, after a video circulated on social media in which Okai purportedly threatened to kill Yaw Ampofo, the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA).

Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Regional Police Command, confirmed the arrest in an official statement. Okai is currently in custody and is reportedly cooperating with investigators. Authorities are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the video before determining formal charges or legal actions.

Police have urged the public to avoid sharing unverified information regarding the case to prevent interference with the ongoing investigation.
