Ayitey Powers remanded for alleged death threat against NSA director

Michael Ayitey Okai, a former professional boxer known as Ayitey Powers, has been remanded for one week by the Dansoman Circuit Court. He faces charges of threat of death following an alleged social media video in which he threatened to shoot Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, the Director-General of Ghana’s National Sports Authority (NSA).

According to the prosecution, the video went viral after Okai stated, “You, Yaw Ampofo, I will shoot you with a gun.” The Greater Accra Regional Police Command intercepted the footage on August 18, 2026, leading to Okai’s arrest after Mr. Ankrah filed a formal complaint.

During proceedings, prosecutors noted that Okai admitted to making the statement in his caution statement, explaining that the remarks were made out of anger. Okai has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is scheduled to return to court on September 2, 2026.
