Ayodele Fayose inaugurated as Chairman of REA Board
Ayodele Fayose, the former Governor of Ekiti State, has been inaugurated as the Chairman of the Governing Board of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) in Abuja. The ceremony was led by the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, and included the installation of Abba Aliyu as the agency's Managing Director, alongside other board members such as Alhaji Ahmadu Abubakar and Ilyasu Makinta.
During his inauguration, Fayose pledged to provide the political will and attract necessary funding to expand electricity access to Nigeria's underserved and rural communities. He emphasized that the agency's mission extends beyond mere power supply to improving the overall quality of life and economic opportunities for the population.
Fayose also drew attention to the social implications of energy poverty. He claimed that the lack of electricity in rural areas leads to limited nighttime recreation, causing residents to return home early and engage in domestic activities. He argued that this lack of alternative social attraction contributes to rapid population growth in these areas, stating, “After 7 o’clock, it gets dark there. Everybody is engaging their wives. And the population simply becomes double.”
Minister Tegbe urged the new board to adopt a people-centered leadership style, focusing on how electrification projects like mini-grids and solar systems can drive human capital investment and economic inclusion.
