Ayotzinapa case: Legal developments for Murillo Karam and Ángel Aguirre

Legal proceedings continue regarding the 2014 forced disappearance of 43 students from the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers College in Mexico.

Former Attorney General Jesús Murillo Karam is facing a legal challenge after a federal judge modified his pretrial detention to house arrest. The judge cited Murillo Karam's health issues as the reason for allowing him to remain at home with an electronic monitoring bracelet and restrictions on leaving Mexico City. However, the Attorney General's Office and the families of the victims have appealed this decision, a matter that has been referred to the First Collegiate Court of Appeals.

Separately, a Mexican court has ordered former Guerrero Governor Ángel Aguirre to stand trial for his alleged involvement in the case. While prosecutors do not claim Aguirre directly participated in the initial abduction, they allege he was responsible for the disappearance and concealment of evidence following the events. Aguirre remains in pretrial detention at the Altiplano maximum-security federal prison.
