Çayırova jeweler robbed using counterfeit gold

A suspect in the Çayırova district of Kocaeli used a counterfeit quarter gold coin to distract a jeweler before stealing a bracelet. The incident was captured on security cameras, which provided evidence for the subsequent investigation. Police quickly apprehended the suspect and recovered the stolen item.

Savaş Kılıç, President of the Gebze Jewelers Association, reported an increase in the use of counterfeit gold in the market. He warned the public to be cautious, particularly regarding transactions offered during hours when jewelry stores are closed, where individuals may claim to have gold instead of cash.

To combat fraud, jewelers utilize technical methods such as touchstones, acid testing, and specialized machines to verify purity and weight. Experts advise customers to purchase from reliable members of the Jewelers Association and to check for specific security seals and QR codes on packaged products.
