Ayser Çalık Secondary School to become education directorate
The Kahramanmaraş Governor's Office has decided to repurpose the Ayser Çalık Secondary School building, which was the site of a fatal shooting on April 15. The 15-classroom facility will now serve as the Onikişubat District Directorate of National Education.
The decision follows a period of uncertainty after the school was temporarily closed due to the psychological impact on students and requests from parents. The attack, carried out by 14-year-old İsa Aras Mersinli using weapons belonging to his father, resulted in the deaths of mathematics teacher Ayla Kara and nine students, while 15 others were injured.
The Çalık family, who originally built the school, has consented to the building being used for national education administration purposes. To address the local need for education, a new school is planned to be constructed in the same area to replace the former Ayser Çalık Secondary School.
