Aysén fiber optic project to connect 8,000 rural families

The Chilean government and the Aysén Regional Government have announced the awarding of the ‘Última Milla’ fiber optic project to Mundo Telecomunicaciones. The initiative aims to bridge the digital divide in rural areas of the Aysén Region by deploying approximately 665 kilometers of fiber optic cabling and 512 kilometers of access networks.

The project is expected to benefit approximately 8,000 households across 33 localities within six communes: Coyhaique, Aysén, Cisnes, Las Guaitecas, Chile Chico, and Tortel. Funded entirely by the Regional Government with an investment of 7,683 million pesos, the infrastructure will connect to the existing Fibra Óptica Austral network.

Subsecretary of Telecommunications Romina Garrido stated that the project aims to provide high-speed connectivity comparable to major urban centers. Residential plans are expected to be highly accessible, with speeds up to 1 Gbps offered at monthly rates of approximately 12,000 pesos. To support immediate needs, satellite backup solutions and digital tools have already been provided to the Valle Simpson Rural School during the construction phase.
