Aysén region marks 50 years of Carretera Austral with tourism and infrastructure focus
The Aysén region in Chile is marking the 50th anniversary of the Carretera Austral, a vital route connecting Patagonian localities. While the road remains a central pillar for connectivity and tourism, debates continue regarding paving, maintenance, and the reliability of maritime crossings due to weather conditions.
To address these needs, the Ministry of the Interior has announced a road investment plan for the coming years, with the Ministry of Public Works and the Regional Government of Aysén highlighting specific projects across various sections. These announcements focus on planned works rather than the completion of full paving.
In tandem with infrastructure discussions, the Aysén commune has officially inaugurated its tourism season. During the launch event, it was confirmed that the locality will host the 2027 Congress of Tourism Municipalities. Regional authorities and the Undersecretary of Tourism, María Paz Lagos, emphasized the importance of the Aysén Tourism Development Plan (PLADETUR) to guide sustainable growth through 2028.
