Aysén regional GDP falls 4.2% in second quarter

The Aysén Region experienced a 4.2% decline in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) during the second quarter of 2026, according to reports from the Central Bank. This follows a previous contraction of 1.7% recorded between January and March of the same year.

The downturn is attributed to a significant slowdown in the salmon industry and the construction sector. In the construction industry, approximately 979 jobs have been lost over a twelve-month period.

Regional authorities, including the Secretary of Economy, Development, and Tourism, Rodrigo Aguilera Silva, noted that while aquaculture and construction have struggled, upcoming public and private works, such as paving projects on the Carretera Austral, are expected to help stimulate the regional economy toward the end of the year.
