Ayushman Bharat: Government imposes fines and removes hospitals for fraud

The Indian government has implemented strict measures to combat fraud within the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) scheme. Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda reported that 2,359 hospitals have been removed from the scheme and 1,200 have been temporarily suspended for violating guidelines. To address unauthorized billing and false claims, the government has filed 29 FIRs and imposed fines totaling Rs 328.49 crore.

To detect irregularities, the National Health Authority is utilizing artificial intelligence and machine learning through its National Anti-Fraud Unit. These automated systems are designed to flag suspicious patterns, such as duplicate claims or unnecessary medical procedures, often within 24 hours of a claim submission.

Eligible beneficiaries can manage their Ayushman Cards through various digital channels. This includes applying or downloading the card via the official website or through a dedicated WhatsApp chatbot by contacting +91 72908 23838. The scheme provides cashless health insurance coverage of up to Rs 500,000 for eligible families.
