The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) has completed eight years of operation, marking a significant milestone in India's public health sector. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the program as the world’s largest healthcare scheme, providing an annual health cover of up to Rs 5 lakh to more than 60 crore beneficiaries.

Official data indicates that the scheme has facilitated over 13 crore hospital admissions, with cumulative treatments valued at more than Rs 2 lakh crore. The program operates through a vast network of over 38,000 to 39,000 empanelled public and private hospitals. Additionally, the Ayushman Arogya Mandirs have recorded more than 500 crore outpatient and health consultation visits, strengthening primary healthcare at the grassroots level.

To ensure program integrity, the National Health Authority is utilizing AI-based fraud detection and digital health platforms. The scheme's scope was recently expanded in March 2024 to include approximately 37 lakh families of ASHAs and Anganwadi workers. Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda noted that the initiative has provided a vital safety net, protecting millions of families from the financial burden of medical emergencies.
