Wat Phutthaisawan abbot arrested for embezzlement and sex scandal

Thai police have arrested Phra Wachirayan Wi, the 66-year-old former abbot of the historic Wat Phutthaisawan in Ayutthaya, and his 47-year-old female associate, Punyavee Rungrueang, on suspicion of embezzling temple funds and money laundering.

Investigators allege the pair misappropriated over 92 million baht through more than 20 unauthorized donation receipts issued over a two-year period. The funds, intended for temple renovations and sacred amulets, were reportedly diverted to the associate's bank accounts to conceal their origin. During raids, authorities seized significant assets, including cash, gold bars, jewelry, and land deeds, with some reports estimating the total value of seized items at over 720 million baht.

In addition to financial crimes, CCTV footage from the abbot's residence captured him engaging in sexual activity with the associate on a dining table, a violation of monastic vows of celibacy. Following the arrest, the former abbot was defrocked. He has denied the embezzlement charges but admitted to the romantic relationship.
