Azawad Liberation Front seeks new alliances in Libya and Abu Dhabi
The Front de libération de l’Azawad (FLA), a Malian separatist movement, is seeking new international alliances to counter military pressure from Bamako following the loss of its stronghold in Kidal.
Seeking to bypass traditional political mediation, a FLA delegation recently met with Saddam Haftar, a key figure in the Libyan National Army in Benghazi, to request military equipment and cooperation. This diplomatic shift aims to secure resources through Libyan and Emirati-linked networks, specifically looking toward Abu Dhabi for influence.
The movement's pivot toward Benghazi and the United Arab Emirates raises regional security concerns. For Algeria, the involvement of foreign networks near its borders is a significant concern. Additionally, such support could complicate the position of Russia, which utilizes eastern Libya as a logistical base for its activities in Africa, including the Africa Corps currently supporting the Malian government.
