Azeez Al-Shaair faces NFL discipline over Gaza-related eye black messages

Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair has faced multiple fines and threats of removal from games by the NFL for using his eye black to display messages related to the conflict in Gaza.

During a January playoff game, Al-Shaair was fined $11,953 for wearing eye black that read ‘stop the genocide’. In the current season, he received an $11,941 fine for writing the name of Hind Rajab, a 4-year-old Palestinian girl killed in Gaza, on his equipment. During a Week 2 game against the Cincinnati Bengals, he wrote the name of another deceased child, Wafaa Akila, on his eye black. Reports indicate that league officials threatened to bar him from continuing the game if the message was not removed.

Al-Shaair has stated that he is willing to accept financial penalties to convey his message, noting that the humanitarian situation is ‘bigger than me’. He emphasized his desire to bring attention to the loss of innocent lives, stating, ‘Is a life worth $11,000? I think it’s priceless.’
