The announcement triggered a drop in Brent crude of about 5 % to roughly $84 a barrel and a sharp decline in traffic, with only 14 vessels recorded in the strait versus 37 the week before. The waterway carries roughly 20 % of global oil consumption, so the negotiations and related U.S. actions have significant implications for world energy markets.
