Azerbaijan advances green energy and infrastructure projects
Azerbaijan is expanding its renewable energy capacity and infrastructure through several strategic initiatives. Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov announced discussions with China Datang Overseas Investment regarding 300 MW of green energy projects, including 100 MW of solar and 200 MW of offshore wind power. These efforts align with the country's goal to increase the share of renewables in its energy mix to approximately 43% by 2035.
In the energy storage sector, PASHA Bank is financing a $58.6 million project in collaboration with Turkey's YEO Teknoloji. The project involves constructing a 125 MW / 250 MWh battery-based energy storage system to enhance grid stability and facilitate the efficient use of renewable energy. This will add 250 MWh of capacity to existing infrastructure.
Financially, the State Oil Fund of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOFAZ) reported a 67% increase in assets over the last five years, rising from approximately $44.3 billion to $74 billion. The fund manages its investment portfolio through strict risk management and rebalancing protocols, recently selling gold to maintain its target allocation following price surges.
