Azerbaijan Airlines transforms AZAL Miles into fintech ecosystem

Comarch Loyalty has overhauled the AZAL Miles frequent flyer program for Azerbaijan Airlines, transitioning it from a traditional distance-based system to a fintech-oriented model. The updated program functions as a digital wallet, allowing members to earn and spend miles through a network of non-airline partners via a QR scanner integrated into the AZAL app.

Key features of the new architecture include a 'Cash+Miles' payment module, which enables passengers to split transactions between cash and accumulated miles at checkout. The system also supports direct third-party API connections, such as a recent integration with the ride-hailing service Bolt, allowing users to exchange miles for ride vouchers directly within their accounts.

On the backend, an automation engine manages the program's lifecycle, including the distribution of welcome miles, birthday miles, and targeted promotional codes. The new system also ties status miles directly to ticket spending rather than flight distance.
