Azerbaijan and Armenia officials meet in Lachin over electricity trade
Energy officials from Azerbaijan and Armenia met in Lachin to discuss electricity trade and the potential interconnection of their respective power grids. The meeting involved technical representatives from Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Energy and Azerenerji, alongside Armenia’s Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure and its Electricity System Operator.
Discussions focused on the possibilities for importing and exporting electricity across the state border. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev previously indicated that Azerbaijan could supply electricity to Armenia, noting that Armenia faces risks of energy deficits due to the aging Soviet-era Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant. Aliyev also mentioned that a project to transmit electricity from Azerbaijan through Armenia to Nakhchivan is ready and could be completed within six months.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan noted that Azerbaijani electricity could assist in meeting Armenia’s increasing energy demands, which are being driven by growing infrastructure needs, such as those for artificial intelligence.
